Reading: Students are to finish their theme writing over an independent reading book. I have told students if they don't have the internet to write it on paper, and then they can type it up when they get back to school.  Most students are almost done!  The theme writing should include the name of your book and two examples of how that theme is shown in your story.  (Remember transitions such as For example...., and Another example is......!


Read for 1/2 hour so you can work on your independent reading goal!


Writing: Your opinion writing is due by Friday. Make sure to have 5 paragraphs including an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Mrs. Sprague will be grading them over break.  Make sure to edit for capitalization such as the word I and the first letter of a sentence. Also, edit for periods and commas.

Writing: Students should continue to work on their opinion writing, and need to be completed by the end of this week.  In class today, students worked on adding examples for each reason.  Students could add an example from their own life or give details from an expert about a reason. (They were shown how to incorporate information that would back up their opinion from a web resource)

Reading: Read for 1/2 hour - work on theme writing which will also be due by the end of the week.

Spelling: Students have holiday words to study this week. They wrote them in their reading or writing notebook.

We went to the Grand today, To See, It's a Wonderful Life, and it was great!  Students got to see and hear a Radio Talk Show being performed.  We also watched a movie in class and we will be comparing and contrasting the two genres.

I have not given students homework besides reading for 1/2 hour because of practicing for the concert and going to the Grand. 


As far as writing, students should have at least 3 paragraphs for their opinion writing. If they don't have that much done they should be working on it.

The K - 4 Concert will be tomorrow, Wednesday, December 13. Students should come into the room and be here by 5:40. Hope to see you then!

The Social Studies quiz will be the beginning of next week because of the school dismissal and concert rehearsal.   We will be studying in class as well.

Writing: Students should be working on the second or third paragraph of their opinion writing.  We have been working on using topic sentences for each paragraph. Then examples or expert opinion under each paragraph.

Opinion Writing:
Introductory Paragraph:  Includes catchy lead, such as a question or interesting fact, along with background information about topic, and thesis. (Thesis is opinion + 3 reasons)

Second paragraph:   First reason - Which should have topic sentence, plus examples or expert opinion you have researched.

Third paragraph: Second paragraph - Topic sentence such as my second reason ....... plus examples or expert opinion

Fourth paragraph: Third paragraph  - topic sentence such as My Third reason ..... plus examples or expert opinion

Conclusion:  - Wrap up everything you said, but in a different way

Writing: Students should have their introduction and first paragraph completed at this point. Please have them share with you what they have written so far! We are off to a great start on our opinion writings.

Reading: Read for 1/2 hour and add to your reader's notebook. We have been learning about what a theme is and students are writing down what happens in their stories or writing down what a character may say or do. This will, hopefully, help us to make an inference about at theme.

Spelling: Study those spelling words! We had a short week last week, and the Veteran's Day Assembly so it put us behind in Spelling.

Students will be presenting information about a veteran on Thursday, November 9 at 9:30 am in the gym.  Parents are invited to attend!

We will also be going to see Alice in Wonderland at the Grand on Friday, November 17.

Don't forget there is no school on November 10.

Homework:  Students should have their information about a veteran on a notecard or 1/2 sheet of paper I gave them.

We will be writing the information into complete sentences tomorrow.

Reading: Two reading responses will be due this week!

Spelling: Spelling quiz tomorrow so study Unit 9 words.

Social Studies: This is not mandatory because we are doing most of it in class, but if students want to they can be looking for information on their landform for the slide show.

For Veteran's Day 4th grade students will be sharing information about a person they know who served or is serving in the military.  It does not have to be someone they are related to, so a close friend could work as well.

Information they should be asking includes: The person's name, branch of service, how long they served, rank, something special about them, special memories of being in the service, any awards, etc.

Some students still have not edited their narrative so they should continue to edit.

Writing: Continue to revise or edit your writing - Editing - Indent new paragraphs, capitalize the word "I"  and proper nouns.  Make sure to put in periods where there is a complete thought.

We also have the Book Fair going on this week.  Grade 4S went today, but they can bring money in any day this week to get a book.   A lot of students know just what they want to buy!

Reading: Read 1/2 hour 4N has a reading response due for Tuesday.  What happened in your story while you read today and how did your character feel about what happened. One reading group just started reading Knee Knock Rise so they will be writing about how the people in the town feel about  the Mountain. They should use the book to help them with the response.

Writing:  Continue to writing personal narrative  - We were shooting to finish rough draft by this Friday.  (5 paragraphs)  Keep up the hard work!  If you don't have the internet you can write a paragraph on paper so you can type it when you get to school. 

Reading: You will be scored on three reading responses this week.  Remember to write it from the character's point of view. Remember it should be at least a 1/2 a page.

We have also been learning when to start a new paragraph such as when a new event happens or an new setting.

Reading: Read for 1/2 hour - Finish reading response which should be 5 - 6 sentences.  Students were given a sheet from which to choose from. This should be from the character's point of view so more like a diary entry or journal entry. For example.... I am so upset because.......

Spelling: Unit  7  3rd page 53 - Study words  - Think of strategies we learned in class.  Breaking the word up into syllables, or underline the tricky parts!

Students should also be revising to make sure they have paragraphs. Paragraphs could start when a new event happens, new setting, and/or a new person is speaking.  Today, they had a lesson on including dialogue in their writing.

Writing: Work on Personal Narrative - You should have two paragraphs with at least 5 to 6 sentences in each. Remember a personal narrative should have your sensory imagery, your thoughts and feelings, and dialogue. You are not just listing events because you want to grab the reader's attention. 

You should also be looking where you need to start a new paragraph.  Remember what we learned in class. You start a new paragraph when there is a new event, new setting, or someone new is speaking.


If you don't have access to google docs you can do you writing on paper and then type it up when you are in class.  Remember to add detail.

Expanding Vocabulary: Each student need to choose 3 words from their reading that he/she thinks is interesting or cool! They can write them down on a sticky note and leave right in their books or put them in their reading notebook.

Wednesday has been a great day! Fourth graders wrote an on demand narrative writing. We will soon be starting our narrative writing unit and this on demand writing will give me a snapshot of what students are able to do and need to learn.

We are off to an amazing Monday!  Students are working on reading responses and analyzing a character in a Tall Tale.  We are also learning how to use Google Docs!  The students are excited to be able to type and share their document with me.  Students will be posting what they have written soon!


Students will have a quiz on Unit 1 Spelling words on Friday.   They should also be reading for at least a 1/2 hour every night!  


In Social Studies we are starting to learn all the features of a map, and we started out learning two important words. (latitude and longitude)

I was excited to meet all the students in Mr. Nickerson's class today!  

Students started writing about a special place today in Writing. We read the book, All the Places to Love and we discussed how the author used similes in her descriptions.  


Students should be reading for 1/2 hour tonight!  

Open House is on September 6 from 5 - 6. The newsletter said it was from 5 - 7 but it was incorrect. 

There is no school on Columbus Day, October 9.

August 30 First Day of School

The first day of school was awesome! It was so great to meet my homeroom class!  We accomplished a lot in one day! Students were able to pick out an independent reading book and should be reading for 1/2 hour tonight.  (This reading assignment will be for Monday - Thursday throughout the year.)

They also need to bring in a summer souvenir. It needs to be small and could symbolize an event, a person, or special place.    

We brainstormed how our class will run smoothly this year. Students came up with all the ideas for being respectful such as being polite, working quietly, and Listening when someone else is talking.   

For responsibility students came up with ideas such as cleaning up after themselves, following directions, and being prepared!
