Questioning While Reading

Click on the link below to read and practice asking bigger questions as you read. Sometimes people call bigger questions thicker or inferential questions. They are questions that you have to think about clues before trying to answer.

Tuesday, December 19

Reading: Students are to finish their theme writing over an independent reading book. I have told students if they don't have the internet to write it on paper, and then they can type it up when they get back to school.  Most students are almost done!  The theme writing should include the name of your book and two examples of how that theme is shown in your story.  (Remember transitions such as For example...., and Another example is......!

Read for 1/2 hour so you can work on your independent reading goal!

Writing: Your opinion writing is due by Friday. Make sure to have 5 paragraphs including an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Mrs. Sprague will be grading them over break.  Make sure to edit for capitalization such as the word I and the first letter of a sentence. Also, edit for periods and commas.

(They were shown how to incorporate information that would back up their opinion from a web resource)

Reading: Read for 1/2 hour - work on theme writing which will also be due by the end of the week.

Spelling: Students have holiday words to study this week. They wrote them in their reading or writing notebook.

Friday, December 15

We went to the Grand today, To See, It's a Wonderful Life, and it was great!  Students got to see and hear a Radio Talk Show being performed.  We also watched a movie in class and we will be comparing and contrasting the two genres.

I have not given students homework besides reading for 1/2 hour because of practicing for the concert and going to the Grand.

As far as writing, students should have at least 3 paragraphs for their opinion writing. If they don't have that much done they should be working on it.

There is a K - 4 Christmas concert on December 13 at 6:00.

We are going to the Grand on December 15 to see It's a Wonderful Life!

Homework:

Writing: Students should have their introduction and first paragraph completed at this point. Please have them share with you what they have written so far! We are off to a great start on our opinion writings.

Reading: Read for 1/2 hour and add to your reader's notebook. We have been learning about what a theme is and students are writing down what happens in their stories or writing down what a character may say or do. This will, hopefully, help us to make an inference about at theme.
