Why did we study owl pellets?
We can identify precisely what the bird has been feeding on. This is difficult enough with any bird,
especially with a night hunter like an owl.
We can get clues to the owl’s hunting habits from the prey it has taken.
We can estimate the numbers of different kinds of prey it takes.
If we find out more about the the prey animals, we learn a great deal about food chains and the exact part the owl plays in them.
We also had FUN!

Writing: Students have been gathering ideas for a personal narrative. Some of the brainstorming activities include listing people who have mattered to them and events they may have shared with this person, they listed favorite places and short memories that may have happened at this place, today they listed first times and last times they may have done something.
They are to choose from one of these ideas and write at least a page about this event. This is to be done in their writer's notebook.
Students may work on their acrostic poem if they want to, but it is not mandatory.

Welcome 4th Graders!
Mrs. Sprague is so excited to meet you and have you in my class. I have planned a great deal to meet the educational goals for 4th grade, and I hope you enjoy the learning opportunities this year! I am eager to get started and we have a fun-filled year ahead. We will be reading and writing a lot! We will also become explorers in Social Studies and do hands-on learning in science.
The 4th grade curriculum covers many exciting new topics and this year will be filled with many meaningful learning experiences. I am passionate about learning and feel that students can learn best when their lessons are relevant and useful. I plan on providing your child with many memorable educational experiences and hands-on activities to help facilitate their learning in a practical way.
I have very high expectations for my 4th grade students, and I am confident we can meet these expectations with teamwork and communication. A child’s quality education needs support and hard work from the teacher, parent, and student; Let’s work together to reach our maximum potential this year!
The First day of school is Wednesday, September 2. Open House will be on September 16th from 5:00 to 7:00. A PTO meeting will follow, and the members of the organization are very eager to get more people involved. We hope to see you there!
Picture Day is on October 14th.

May 13 Homework
Jump Ship To Freedom - Read up through Chapter 8. (Same as yesterday) You will need to do three responses from the worksheet that was handed out on Monday. Remember an inference is made by looking at clues. You are to write a well written responses by making an inference about something that happens in chapter 8. This could be about a decision Daniel has made, how he is treated or by another character, etc.
You also need to come up with at least two questions after reading this chapter. Make sure to use clues from the chapter.
Number the Stars: Chapter 6 - 3 responses
Book Review - Should have at least 4 paragraphs with evidence from the novel
Rodman Philbrick has some helpful hints for writing a book review. Check it to see if there are elements you could add in your review. After reading some of your reviews, I think you may want a paragraph describing the main character or maybe the antagonist in the story.

Pi Day
NATIONAL PI DAY
According to MEA, "National Pi Day celebrates Pi, a mathematical concept and a number that never ends...yet. Often, we round it off to 3.14. But this year is 3.14.15, is the only time this century that the first 5 digits of Pi are in the date."
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, 2015 around the world. Pi (Greek letter π) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter which is approximately 3.14159.
